What papercrafting supply do you hoard?

Sara N
04-01-2009, 03:47 AM
Okay, I'll be the first one to confess...yes, I do hoard paper (and save the "special" stuff for people I know will appreciate it--I know I'm not the only one), but I'm also guilty of hoarding vintage book pages and music note paper, and those self-adhesive crystal stickers. I can never have enough...but I do have enough!

Being a new scrapper, I have been "hoarding" scrap papers. I like the vintage, florals, and classic styles. The Sarapapers are great! Thanks for the marvelous inspirations here in Paperwishes.

Oh you can never have enough paper! LOL I have to admit to being an "idea" saver. You know, just in case the occasion comes up to us it. Well, I'll be ready. I keep mine in a binder. I am always ripping out things from magazines and jotting down notes. After all...I need things to do with all that paper! LOL

It was difficult for me to cut my more expensive papers, but I have gotten beyond that now. When it's all gone, there's more at the store. I do have some handmade rice paper a friend brought me back from Japan recently that I just cannot cut into. I just celebrated my one year of cardmaking and my card club friends tell me that I'm one of the few they know who actually "uses" all my stamps, supplies, etc. They seem to buy things and then just stow them away. They have rubber stamp sets they have had for years and have never used. So, I borrow them and stamp images. They say they feel better about them knowing they have been used.

I guess you can say I'm a hoarder of paper and a whole bunch of other things. I buy things and then when it's time to use them, I tend to forget what I bought them for other than I like them. :o I have to learn to copy what I wanted to do with them in the first place but I just love scrap supplies!!

I hoard every thing as is in evidence in my scraproom. Paper I have enough to open a store. I am a greeting card maker I love making them and sending them to Soldiers.

Jan D. in Jax, FL
04-01-2009, 06:44 AM
Hi Ic212...I, too, make cards for our troops. If you are interested, check out the cardsforheroes.org website. We make cards that are sent to the troops who use our cards for writing home. The only rule is you cannot use glitter since it can get on their uniforms and poses some kind of danger for them. I've been using the dazzles in place of glitter and I love them. We work ahead of the holidays by at least 6 weeks because you have to allow time to get your cards to the distribution person (I'm in FL so I send to Kansas) who sends them to the troops all over the world and then the troops have to have time to write and send the cards home in time for the holiday. I just sent Mother's Day cards last week. Because our troops don't have to pay postage, you can make your cards as chunky as you like and not have to worry about extra postage. I always enclose envelopes for my cards because they do seem to always need them. When I can, I enclose extra envelopes.

Hi. My name is Lillian ... and I'm a paper hoarder.

I am probably responsible for a small portion of global warming as at least 2 whole trees have given themselves up so that I might buy pretty papers to use in my crafting passion. I don't even need a reason to buy a pretty piece of paper - if it speaks to me, then by golly I MUST have it. :)

Mary

I hoard Paper! I am just about to get involved with some projects I haven't been able to work on so I vow to use my most favorite paper! I'm also getting some kind of weird addiction to rubber stamps. I am trying really hard to stay with what I know I'll use but why, oh why do they continue to come out with so many new stamps all over the place LOL!

I hoard paper as well. However, I did just send a huge care package to another scrapper I met on the Fiskateer message board who had a fire last year, and lost all her stuff. It made me feel good to share some of my stash, and I know that she'll make good use of it. I can't wait to see what she does with it!

We should all find a new scrapper, daycare or community program and donate to their stash! It might help our overflowing scrap areas if we pare down a bit!

well im afraid im also guilty of hoading all the goodies and struggling to use them for the purpose in which they were intended LOL

you see i watch sara, paulette and others where they turn those gorgeous goodies into something wonderful and i think oh its a must have and ill give it a go myself but when it arrives i just want to fill up my craft draws and desk draws and boxes and files and desk top space and, and, and, and, well and any other area of my upstairs rooms where i can stash them ... you get the picture im sure, but then i cant draw myself to use any of them. they just look to good to use!! none of them will ever get to fullfill their crafty destiny here im afraid :(

see im drooling at the mouth thinking about them all ... its an illness im sure!!! well thats my excuse and im sticking to it ... so dont go telling anyone ok!!

i do make cards and scrapbook pages but it takes me ages to choose the right papers, colour scheme and embellishments - i dont want to spoil any of them. i do have it bad dont i?

anyway, i know im gonna love this place as they say .... 'bird of a feather flock together'. so im expecting lots of support and advice from you crafty birds out there.

have a great day and a big hellllloooooooo to you all. please stop by and say hi to me sometime .... remember ITS 'CRAFTY' THERAPY FOR THE SOUL all this sharing!!

bye bye ;)

I love paper, especially the HOTP paper. I belong to the Scrapbookers Personal Shopper and when I get the box I love to just sit and look at all the paper and "pet" it, just like Sara does on the webisodes. But then I've been slow to actually sit down and get the many scrapbooking pages I want to get done actually done. The papers are so perfect, that then I feel this pressure to make the page be perfect, because if it isn't then I'll feel guilty for having used the paper and not have turned it into a worthy page. I agree this is an illness :).

The way I deal with the guilt though is by making cards which I've begun to sell and I donate the proceeds to our local food pantry. This way I get to make as many cards as I want without worrying about what am I going to do with all those cards, and I don't feel so guilty about the money I've spent on the paper, or on using the paper, because it's all for a good cause. We have to find some balance folks :).

I too hoard paper! I think it's only natural as it's the base of our work, whether it be scrapbooking, cardmaking, or papercrafting. None of these crafts would be anything without paper.
I have been working on trying to reduce my paper stash lately by actually using it, but I keep on buying more, always from HOTP. Mom's Warehouse Sale can be dangerous, especially when a book of paper is only $1.
I used to hoard fabric and I still have boxes and boxes of it. But I have found that paper costs less and takes less room to store. It's also less intimadating to start cutting into, especially when I tell myself "relax, it's only paper!"

Brads, Brads, and more Brads and everytime I see a new one I have to order it. I even ordered multiples of the large sized discounted brads. Like why but to my credit I have used them in multiple ways. Crossing the borders of meaning of them. Like the movie set as a Happy 16th birthday card for a teenage boy. He loved it. The dancing set as a celebraition of marriage card.:o I am in desperate need of a large organizer for all my brads as right now I have them in a box in the original packages. So if anybody has any idea for my hundreds of brads please let me know. :D

yep...that's me...a real paper ***** lol...I cannot even confess as to how much I have...let's just say I have my own paper racks (full) and at least 12 (12x12) plastic paper boxes. I got sucked into this crafty stuff by my sis's..they both do way more stuff than I do...I just seem to collect stuff! I have my own store truly...that much stuff! I too have many stamp sets I have never used but had to have! I am just now beginning to play more as I have more time. My biggest barrier to crafting is my eratic sleep schedule...but that will be better soon! Cher

Hi...I store my brads in bead storage things I got at Joanne's...they are 6 sided...and have 6 little compartments I think in each of the 6 large boxes. U pop them on and off easily. I have 3 of these to hold all most of my brads. They really hold ALOT! I do not use eyelets as much so I keep those in flat plactic boxes with many compartments...again, from Joanns. Good Luck

Textured cardstock! I hoard that like crazy. I will save and use every last scrap I can before *gulp* cutting into a new 12x12 piece. I just love the colors, the feel, the scent. My family thinks I'm nuts, LOL!

Oh for me it is the thrill of the hunt and then getting it for 40%-50% off with coupons at M (Michaels), JA (Joanns) or HL (Hobby Lobby).

However, when I can't find what I want at the 3 above I stop and browse through PW (Paperwishes) and then it is off to order.

We are enablers ......yes we are!!!

Hi & good morning everyone!!
I collect caradstock & brads-lots abd lots of cardstock & brads. My standard mode is to buy 5 sheets of a color. I did have one color, Bazzill's Chili, that my LSS would let me order by the package. It's one of those colors that goes w/ everything, either a little or a lot. Anyone else have a favorite pattern or color that must be in your stash? Linden

I too am a paper hoarder. I LOVE paper -- always have -- even before I got into scrapbooking. Now, that I've found scrapbook papers, I REALLY have a challenge. :o However, I've found that many papers that look really cool, turn out to be difficult to actually use in a layout because I don't want to cover up the images with other photos! Fortunately that doesn't tend to be the case with Paper Wishes paper. Most of their paper seems designed with that issue in mind so the images are small enough and arranged well enough that layouts aren't such a challenge. Thanks Paper Wishes! :D

I have a ton of paper---really! It may even weigh more than a ton! :)
Since I teach I have to keep a lot of products on hand and I also have a lot of embellishments also-flowers, brads, etc... I make page-kits for my groups and it takes a lot to fill them.
Psssst---I would have a lot even if I didn't teach.... I guess I have officially become one of the "paper hoarder gang"!

I like to store my smaller to mid-size brads in bead boxes I got at Joannes. They are small clear plastic containers 4" x 6" x 1 1/2" that are filled with 24 smaller boxes (each is about 2" x 1" x 1/2"). I really like these because it's easy to organize them by color and type, see what I have, and get to them without dumping everything else out. If I will be working with a particular color or type, I can just pull the smaller inside boxes to take with me. And nothing jumps from their own container to the one next to it, like can happen with some organizers.

Well that's a loaded question...I don't particularly hoard anything special I just have a "LOT OF STUFF" in my cardmaking collection. I started to make my own cards about 3 years ago with a pack of blank cards,a stencil with a bunch of bugs and flowers and a pack of colored pencils.I now have graduated to having so much stuff that I just sometimes just look at it all and say to myself,"What have you gone and done here?" It was easier with a few things and now I have so much stuff I don't know where to start and stop. ~Sandra~

I hoard papers too.. but I found a solution. I use them on my own scrapbook pages..then I still get to see them all the time!! the same goes for those 'too beautiful to use' stickers.

I also hoard foils. I am totally addicted to foiling...it's like magic everytime I peel the stuff off! I have 3 large boxes and it's still growing Lol!!

I hoard mostly paper .. but have been known to hoard a few other things too : )) I guess I hoard the paper because I figure I'll never find it again, and actually when you think about it, that's a really good excuse because patterned paper designs come and go like the wind. I guess if you find one you really like, buy lots!! Lots of times I just don't realize until I'm using it how much I really like it, then go to find it again, and nope, not there...

My first post, and it is about my tendency to hoard supplies! LOL! I had to think about this, and I am going to answer with dyed-through cardstock. I love that stuff. I get tired of inking away the white center of a lot of the colors, and so I save away my good stuff for those shapes that are stinkers to ink! I also have to include bits and pieces of fabric trims because I use them all the time in mini-books. I suppose two things is enough, although now that I think about it....

Jan D. and Ic212,
Thanks for the great idea about making cards for our troops. Our group is always looking for projects and this one will be a great and useful one. It will all make us feel better about doing something for our troops. With the economy the way it is, our troops are being forgotten I'm afraid.

I'm SO afraid my favorite SBS is going to run out of my favorite new just-gotta-have, I feel it's my DUTY to buy every sheet before they run out. My husband works to support my habit. It's gotta be paper for me too! I now have over 15 feet of paper (yes, that's stacked vertically) and I love every piece. But I'm really guilty of hoarding everything; nothing in my house is tossed or recycled without passing by me first.

Our little group of friends adopted a service unit a few years ago and we make cards for them to send home to their loved ones. We usually mail them 6 months ahead (we are working on Christmas, New Years, Mother's Day and Father's Day). We've heard that there is always the perfect card for them when they need it. Thanks for the suggestion to send extra envelopes. We'll start doing that.

I know what you mean, Linden - I live about 20 minutes from the Bazzill warehouse, and 15 minutes from their family-owned scrapbook store. Every single color and texture they make is always available. I'll start saving now for Bazzill's anual warehouse sale - a pizza box bulging at every seam for $10, which averages out to about .05 a sheet. They say as long as it will shut (somewhat) - it's 10 bucks. Black, French Vanilla, Parakeet, and a very special shade of pink (can't remember the name of it at the moment) that's like a cross between a pale pink and a peach - those are the colors I have to buy by the pack. I'm hopeless - and as long as I live here - I'll REMAIN hopeless. Be of good cheer I understand your weakness :(

The truth? When DS was a little boy he didn't collect animals, insects and rocks. He collected lost charms in the school playground. Girls would dislodge dangling charms from their barettes, bracelets and keychains all the time while they were playing. They weren't valuable, but some were unusual and made great embellishments. I confiscated them for that use and you don't know how many times I've been to the stash when I needed something odd, such as scissors or a carousel horse or fish!

Yeah, oldma, it's VERY hard to keep a level head. If you think Bazzill's paper is fantastic, you should see his wife's scrapbook store. It is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS. 3 large combined suites in a shopping plaza. And then on top of all that - they have 25 designers that teach classes on a regular basis. Many of whom design for Bazzill. In short - we all call it the "evil store" - because the contents of your wallet just seem to DISAPPEAR like magic when you walk in the door :( They have their warehouse sales when the CK conventions come to town twice a year. Competition is getting tough now just getting in the door.

Gosh it makes me so sad to read about all of you living near scrap book warehouses and retreats. There is nothing near me and I mean nothing as far as scrap booking and card making is concerned. I would love to be near something like that!!! That is how I come up on this site. I went on the internet to see what I could find.

Oh yeah - and speaking of Scrapbook Answers - sure miss that magazine. I learned how to do such cool things from that magazine.

Yes, that was such a great magazine! And the convention was so fun. Even though it was "girls" my son attended with me. He would have been 13 at the time, and scrapbooked back then. We had a blast. Don't know if I would ever get back to Phoenix, even tho I would love to.

I totally understand how you feel Teresa. You would think that a big city like London have craft stores but they're all outside, only a few art stores but nothing for scrapbookers/cardmakers. The only thing that comes close to a craft store is Paperchase but they're only stationers really. That's why I started watching the craft hours on QVC UK and that's where I got my first HOTP kits from. You should look into the personal shoppers on paperwishes.com, it's a monthly sub with gorgeous stuff...I'm such an enabler ! LOL :D See no need to have a big craft store to spend money !;)

Teresa, do you know that Paper Wishes has Mom's Warehouse Sale? The sale changes every two weeks. I think a new sale starts on Thursday evening. You can get some good deals that way. :D

Sonshine I don't know of anyone who scrapbooks or even makes cards. Everybody says the same thing, they are too busy or they are not crafty enough to do it. I am still working on ideas on how to get them interest in it. Somebody has got to get hooked on it!!! Melanie thanks for the information. I will check into it.

I hoard brads, especially shaped ones. I have to have one of every new kind I see. lol Then I find myself saving them for just the right occasion.

I too hoard paper......all kinds of paper....different textures, different weights. I also have a growing collection of origami paper and gold foil paper. Right now I have about 5 boxes filled with scrap paper. When I am about to start a new card project.....I set the boxes out and sit in my chair and sketch the card out and try and visualize the card in my head. I can't even start on the card until I can see it in head. A lot of the time it takes me a long to time just to get the concept down in my head, before I actually start on the card.
So it's good to have all the scrap paper to help visualize all the endless possibilities.
