What are your favorite organizational ideas you have used? I'm trying to organize my craft room and need some new ideas. What do you use for paper, embleshments, tools, stamps, etc?

I use the plastic peanut butter jars to store many supplies. The jars stack very easily and since they are clear one can see what is in them. Or they can be put on their sides with just the lids showing and labels can be attached to the lids or you can just write on the lid.

I love the white storage cubes from Michael's-just wait for the 50% coupons and scapbook storage to not be on sale. I have them for paper storage (4 shelves), embellishment/tool storage (3 drawer units), and for card/envelope storage (4 drawer units). I have just discovered that if I run dowels through the holes in the side of milk crates (we have a very nice milkman at work), I can slide in my stamp trays (from the dollar store). The # of trays each crate holds depends on the depth of your trays. The dowels were cheap at the hardware store and they cut them for me for free. Of course the clear stamps are in notebooks. I have hanging organizers from HSN (like shoe organizers), one has small pockets and one has large pockets. These are for most of my punches and a little inexpensive wire shelf unit sits below for larger punches and baskets of scissors/edgers. I have inexpensive shelf units with dolloar store baskets for odds and ends as well as an ELFA desk with all of it's storage. One day I'll be completly organized-it's a work in progress (most drawers and baskets are still empty waiting for boxes to be unpacked from when the bedroom and "paper arts studio" switched rooms. Really all you need in a bedroom is a bed and a dresser-why waste the big room on that!:D

I use the Scrap rack and their system. Everything is sorted by theme and color- doesn't matter what it is: buttons, flowers, brads, stickers, all in the same area and sorted by theme, month, or color. All of my ribbon is seperated into glad plastic containers by color and my pens are all seperated by color and put into little bins that I got at Walmart. All inks, glitter and embossing powder are set by those containers in the same color group. My mom couldn't believe how organized it was and how fast I can find things. Because everything is sorted by theme or color sometimes I may have an idea of what I want but then see something else that will work better.

I got desperate and hired a company that organizes garages only I had them come and organize and build for my craft room. This is what they did and I'm thrilled. The first picture is after and the one on the right is before.

Smoley Hokes y'all are out of my league here. I'm green with envy. The only system I have is the HUSBAND system. Whenever Husband feels like putting up a shelf, I get a shelf. :( Seriously though, I'm one of the lucky ones that has actually 2 out of 3 bedrooms (leaving no room for guests - ahem) converted into an office/sewing room (I work from home), and the other is my scrapbook room/paint studio. Studio being a fancy word for cubicle. My print paper is stored in cropper hoppers on a 12ft long work surface, but my Bazzill is stored in commercial paper racks. I use 2 short-stack metal file cabinets on either end supporting my work table, and I love the see-through large (and CHEAP) chests from good ole Wal-Mart are on either end of the file cabinets. My ribbon is hung on rods that stretch the full length of my 12ft long 2-tier shelves above my work area. However - my BIGGEST life-saver could not do without is my little pink caddy. It holds every single tool I use in scrapping, and I'm never spending time looking for anything. And - in spite of all that table room - guess what? I STILL scrapbook on the dining room table. GO FIGURE!!

Does anyone have workable suggestions on how to organize and store the monthly PW scrapbooking kits? I had been keeping them in their (sturdy ) mailing boxes but now my scraproom is being overrun by them. Do you disassemble the kits and blend in with your other supplies or keep each kit separate? I never heard of the ScrapRack system, but I'm going to check out the link now. Thanks!

For organization I created a desk by using a piece of tempered cut glass (be sure to have the corners rounded) and use two 2-drawer filing cabinets as the legs of the desk. Glass top so I can place a small lamp on the floor under it and instantly becomes my big light box. I use one file cabinet to keep embellishments by using labeled file folders (i.e. Hanger folder tab Animals – inside folders – Cats, Dogs, Misc, and Hanger folder tab Travel – inside folders – Destinations, Signs, etc… The other file cabinet I use the filing system but I have Alphabets (lettering), Words/Phases, Instructions on projects I have picked up, etc… On top of this desk on the left, I have two stackable three drawer 12 x 12 plastic containers. This is where I have one drawer for Borders, one for Frames, and one for Tags, one for Templates, one for items that I am working on but don’t want/need out on the work area yet, and one empty one – but I am sure I will find something to put in it. On the other side, I have my tool caddy bag and a place to keep my sealable water bottle and a cup warmer so it is out of the way for no accidental spills. Then to finish the shape of the longer side of L, I have a wooden secretary hutch with three shelves up top but they are split into nine adjustable sections. Then the pull out work area slide board. Down below behind two doors there is one adjustment shelf. What I did with these spaces is to use baskets that fit in the cubby hole shelves and have them labeled using fun clip art pictues with fonts I like (i.e. Chalks, Glitter & Glue, Ribbons). I then have my buttons in two small crock bowls that have cute cartoon black bears hanging on the side with bees design on shelf. I pens in basket labeled pens like above. I also have a regular bedroom 4-drawer dresser beside this hutch that I have by cricut cutter on top of with the supplies in a basket. Then in each of the drawers I supplies such as one drawer – all punches, next, all things that cut and design paper crimpers, next stamps, and finally stamp supplies (ink pads, cleaner, clear blocks, etc…). This set up works great for my friend and me when she comes over to scrap (one uses the glass desk and one uses the hutch slide area). Of course, you have to find to what works for you, this is my second setup and I love it. I got the secretary hutch idea from the CK Mag April Organization section issue and I got my glass desk idea from my friend when she purchased a real pre-made glass desk when she was creating her space. I just needed to use my files cabinets because I love embellishments. Hope you can take some of my ideas and make them your own. Let me know what ideas you come up with - always room to try new ideas.

Wow such great ideas. I do use the Cropper Hoppers for paper. Going vertical has been the best thing I've done. The Scraprack is a great product but I just don't have the room right now. Although it might be the way to go for me right now. Hmm must think on that one. Any other ideas for embellishments? Rubber stamps?

For small items such as round brads, mini brads, and eyelets, I take them out of the package and store them in little flip-top clear acrylic boxes that look like Tic-Tac mint boxes. These are labeled as to style and manufacturer and fit inside a larger clear acrylic box, which is also labeled. 24 of the small boxes come inside the larger box. Can't remember the name of the manufacturer, but I found them in the bead section at Wal-Mart.

For slightly larger embellishments, such as shaped brads, Great Big Brads and silk flowers, I take them out of their packages and put them in plastic containers originally designed for storing embroidery floss wound on cards. These items and boxes are also labeled. The boxes I like are from DMC and are found in the embroidery floss section at Michael's.

Both types of boxes stack nicely on their own kind and sit on my shelves, within easy reach of my work area. It was a small investment at the time, but it now saves a lot of space to have the embellishments out of their packaging. I also try to keep each kind of embellishment together so I can see what I have, such as a box for silk flowers, a box for brads/mini brads, a box for clips and turn mounts, etc.

My dear husband bought me a nice corner desk for my crafts.I put it in our bedroom as we live in an apartment and I don't have the pleasure of having a room all to myself.Next to my desk is a 3 tiered stand with lots of room for my stuff.Since I like to buy a lot of craft items for making my cards, and it can run into $$, I have been cheap on what I put my stuff in.The grocery store has great little containers that are see through so I use a lot of them. You know the clear ones you get the strawberries in or deli containers that are clear. Those are great for organizing your craft items.I get boxes, containers etc, at yard sales or even out of the trash.Yes,I am a dumpster diver!! I have been making my own cards for 3 years now and I can honestly say you can save a lot of money by just recycling.Oh,I did cheat and bought clear divided containers at Wal-Mart for my brads.About $2 each.I just couldn't handle putting brads in one box and trying to find ones that matched others.Hope this gives you all some ideas.~Sandra~

I put my rubber stamps in cardboard boxes that I have cut to about 1 inch high.I just lay them flat and stack the boxes on top of each other.I like to be frugal so this is what I have done to keep them in order.I just pull them out and see which ones I want to use and it only takes a few seconds to see them as they are all facing the same way and not thrown into a box which I would have to hunt for the ones I want to use. This is a real time saver for me.Oh,yes,I number my stamps and log into a book the stamps I have used for a particular card.Works for me.~Sandra~ :)

I have the modular cube storage system from Michael's. I also waited for the cubes to be off-sale so I could use the 40% coupon. I printed several coupons from my weekly email and would stop at different stores while I was out during the week. I also used junk drawer organizers from Target for my brads, buttons, etc. My Dad made my ink pad storage racks. I have just re-done my craft room and now can't wait to get in there and be creative.

Ladystampzalot, I like your craft room! Clean and stream-line looking. Makes mine look a bit cluttered in comparison.

Like Heather, I also must have things in plastic, to protect them from cat hair and dust. My cat would also love your ribbon holder. The other day I found a short piece of ribbon that he had decided to chew on but at least he didn't eat it this time!

I use the Cropper Hopper paper system to organize the kits. I bought their new, large black plastic holder for the paper (may need a second one...I have been in the Club off and on for quite a few years) and use the white one for flat embellishments. I then store stamps in my stamp system (3 ring binders with plain old protective sheets from Staples). The beads go into a drawer where I keep my brads and eyelets organized. It works pretty well, but it's important to write the name of the kit on everything. Otherwise, mass confusion results (I know this for a fact!!!!!).

Hope this helps!

I store acrylic stamps in a 3 ring 8x11 binder. They usually are on sheets, so I put each sheet inside of a page protector and try to keep them organized by subject matter. It works and it's a fairly cheap and efficient way to store them.
I also purchased photo boxes in all different colors a while ago when you could get them on sale for a little more than a dollar. I keep my larger embellishments (mesh, flowers on cards, chipboard shapes & icons & bulkier items) in these - sorted by color within that colored box.

My biggest challenge is ribbon storage. Not the spools but the last 12" of something. Or last 3" or whatever. I don't throw anything out but right now the scraps are in a tote bag I bought on my last cruise. Not very handy but at least everything is in one place. I have never found a solution I like for storing paper but all my flat embellishments are in sticker binders. One for all things Disney and one for everything else. (I know what that says about me :-0)

Oh and scraps. Good Lord what do you do to organize scraps? Since I began with Creative Memories albums but never liked the white background, I wallpapered every page. So I have hundreds of 1/2" x 12" strips of paper. I got an idea off SCS about weaving them for backgrounds and that's pretty fun. And is using up a lot of them. But all the other scraps are completely out of hand.

Alphabet stickers are in manila file folders in a filing cabinet sorted by color. That's about the most organized thing I have done in my scrap room.

I love the little stacking clear plastic organizers for brads and such and I have them on a shelf in a book case. But they aren't really organized and I have been thinking about adding doors to the case to hide them.

I am going to keep an eye on this thread and probably steal some of the ideas to make my room more user friendly.

They sell these tiny plastic tabs with three slits in them where you weave any lenght of ribbon they look like tags and have a hole where you keep them in stationer ring binders, that could be an option for your ribbon's leftovers.

cruisin_gal, I'm with you in wondering about ribbon storage! I have mine stored in five different ways/places!

The really small pieces of a few inches or so are thrown in a very small plastic box, away from my cat who has been known to chew on them and even ate one once.

Ribbon bobbins or mini spools are stored nicely in plastic boxes originally made for storing cards of embroidery floss. Too bad more ribbons and fibers don't come this way!

A lot of my ribbons and fibers are in plastic shoeboxes, wrapped around long chipboard cards made from old cereal boxes. Ends are secured with hair pins or mini binder clips from the dollar store. This is okay for the one yard pieces, but longer pieces need more room. Also, this way makes creases in the ribbons and fibers that I simply cannot stand and must iron out! :( So, every so often I drag out the iron and ironing board so I can have crease-free ribbon. And it doesn't work well to iron some of the fibers.

Then I got the big idea of using a large clear glass jar to store other ribbons I had. I took a lot of ribbon off their spools and threw them in the jar. Now that the jar is stuffed full, it's hard to find what I'm looking for and I'm not sure they are free of creases. And I regret throwing those empty spools away! :o

So now when I buy a spool of ribbon I just keep them on the spool and put the whole spool in the plastic shoebox. They may take up more room, but they're easier to find and are kept crease-free. Now if the spool end would just not unroll until I needed it! However, not all ribbon is sold by the spool.

Any suggestions?

I got a pretty cool bag made for ribbon storage a couple years ago. It has a zippered top, with plastic see-through sides that are full of holes. You put your ribbon in the bag, then stick one ribbon end through the hole so it's exposed. You want to use it - just pull it out through the hole. =D You can see what you have all the time. I know they're still making them 'cause my favorite "evil" store just displayed one in pink. Oh yeah - and there's a little zippered compartment on the inside top for those misc. pieces. Works for me.

brings back memories. We've got all dogs now, but when we had cats, one in particular, made me get rid of anything living and green. And crunchy plastic, too. He would dig it out of the garbage, take it UNDER OUR BED and for spite. . .geez!!! So I sympathize with your plight.

I thought about getting one of those ribbon holders that you mentioned sonshine, but I have to have mine separated by color and that would mean I would have to buy 10 and then what happens when the ribbon gets really short, but still long enough to tie in knots or bows?
Mine are in clear large glad disposable containers organized by color.

Are there are pointers you can give me about weaving strips? Even though I'm working with the smaller Cardmaker's paper packs for my cards, I still end up with a lot of leftover strips. Weaving them might be an interesting way to cover the front of a card.

I am so impressed by the way most of you are so organized. I live in an apartment and have to economize on storage. I use figurine boxes sorted by theme. The brads I have small plastic containers with dividers, and I need each colour to be by itself. Ribbons are in zip lock bags by theme. I label all the boxes. Current projects I keep in the box closest to my chair.

I found that the Gerber babyfood containers (the rectangular ones) fit perfectly in the cubbie holes of the jexmax cubes.

For those of you who have trouble unscrewing those little caps off of glitter and some of the small embellishments these babyfood containers just flip open.

We have a baby in our family so my DD saves them for me, but I have been know to buy the apple sauce to get the containers and have a nice snack (about $.60). Very economical too and the cardboard that holds the two containers together I use to cut out chipboard.

I store my ribbon on dollpins and found a wire 3 tier stand that I separate the ribbon by color (sort of). I had mine in a large glass bowl but got tired of having to sift through the entire content. Most of my caft studio is jetmax cubes (got to love the 40% off coupons) and I use a glass top for my work space. I use little rectangular cubes from the container store ($1.69 I think) and turn them on their side to hold my various types of pens. I stuck my pins in the head of a stuffed chick. I use magazine racks (container store difinately on sale) to hold all my paper. I use an accordian file (from M's) to store scrap paper by color, and clear stamps. Wood stamps are on shelves on the wall. I have a cricut so I don't buy much die cuts, just cut them when I need them.

:)Hi Sonshine,I think I know what kind of ribbon you are looking for and it is found in the craft department of Wal-Mart.At least that is where I get mine.Every Wal-Mart pretty much carries the same stuff so I think you will find what you are looking for there.I have a few rolls myself. It is 1/4 inch wide and the brand name is "Sheerly Yours." I have it in white and a light pink. They have boxes of different colored ribbons in the same spot and there you will find the satin as well as the silk without the wire inside.Hope this solves your problem.:) ~Sandra~

I don't know about other states but in North Carolina the wal-marts are slowly getting rid of their craft dept. Our store does not carry half as much as they used to and someone told me that they are cutting back until they dont have the craft section. Which means I will have to drive an hour just to get any thing concerning crafts.

That's the way it is here too- I haven't been to a Target in a year, but heard they were getting rid of theirs too. I used to live by a Joanns and loved it. They always had great sales and things that other stores don't carry. They are in the process of building a little shopping center around the corner- so far just a Lowes, but I'm hoping for something with crafts. We only have one vehicle right now so I'm stuck at the house all the time and could use a little walk to a craft store.

Just sit back with a mug of tea or coffee and order from the PW catalogue ! If I lived in the USA, it would be my first port of call for anything crafty. I get my food shopping delivered too (we have 4 supermarkets that offer that service and funnily enough one is owned by Wal-Mart), no lugging the bags back with you to the car, the screaming kids, the line by the cash register......no sir ! I get a lovely van coming round my place and everything is color coded on the bags so I know which one to open first (frozen stuff that is). Anything to ease my life is good news in my book.

I don't know about other states but in North Carolina the wal-marts are slowly getting rid of their craft dept. Our store does not carry half as much as they used to and someone told me that they are cutting back until they dont have the craft section. Which means I will have to drive an hour just to get any thing concerning crafts.

Hi Teresa,I live in Ohio and I can be at out local Wal-Mart in about 4 minutes. :) Yeah,I am really close to 2 malls.Just up the hill from my house.Very conveinient. :) We also have a Joanns in the same area. Our Wal-mart has remodeled in the past year and they have made a larger craft section for us crafters.I don't understand why your craft section is getting smaller!?They have actually started to carry the Martha Stewart items.I have purchased a few of her punches and I like the results. They are a lot less expensive than on e-bay,at least by 1/2.I bought a dove punch from her line which I just love. After using it I find it is a must have for any crafter. It is a beautiful shape.I just use any paper I want and embellish it any way I choose. It looks pretty on an anniversary card.Talk with you later. ~Sandra~

They sell these tiny plastic tabs with three slits in them where you weave any lenght of ribbon they look like tags and have a hole where you keep them in stationer ring binders, that could be an option for your ribbon's leftovers.

Fab - - YOU are an enabler!!! lol I got online and ordered the Ribbon tag bundle of -90 yesterday. Am looking forward to getting it in a few days! - thanks for the suggestion!!

I live about half an hour from two Wal-Marts, one to the north and one to the south. The one to the south remodeled a year or two ago and really reduced the size of their craft section, taking out a lot of their fabric, which doesn't make any sense since there is a fair amount of Amish and Mennonites that shop there. At first we thought they had also gotten rid of their scrapbook supplies, but we finally found them mixed together with the party supplies and photo albums. They used to carry a wonderful selection of scrapbook supplies, larger than their selection in the store to the north, but they cut back on these items too. However, I did notice that they had some of the Martha Stewart items too. I thought Michaels was the sole craft store to carry her brand, but I'm definately wrong as another chain store (Meijer) in our area carries them too.

At least I can find a few HOTP items at Meijer, which is akin to a Super Wal-Mart, although they are far from carrying the whole line. They will carry a few books of papers but the embellishment kits are for books of paper which they don't carry. Doesn't make sense to me but at least they are on sale sometimes!

I believe that M's had an exclusive deal with MS for the first year she was out. If you notice M's MS stuff is white and Wal-Mart's is green. Their pricing is different too for the same thing. I haven't noticed any different in quality, so I always try to check Wal-Mart first for her stuff.

Don't feel alone Teresa - been there, done that. We came out here to Phoenix from a small resort town in Michigan. It's grown a bit since we last lived there. But everytime we went into town, you had to make sure you had a list - it was no running to the store somewhere because you forgot something. We'd have to take a cooler with us for groceries, we'd have to make so many stops. But I miss those days - think of them often. Thank goodness for PaperWishes and the internet.

Not Melanie, but I can answer. Meijers' sb section varies from store to store, but usually it's pretty small. Mostly one side, or smaller, of one aisle. Not a whole lot, but better than nothing. Just wish they had more HOTP stuff. And that's where my dh works too, is Meijer. He's been there over 20 years.

Not to make you jealous, but I went shopping yesterday at Meijer and picked up the Icy Rainbow Creative Kit, which was on sale. But like I said, they have the creative kits but not the coordinating Cardmaker's paper packs. They carried the newer Floral Backgrounds papers but not the matching Sheer Flowers (the flowers they had were the Citrus silk flowers but no matching Use 'Em for Anything Citrus paper). What an odd way to merchandise things! But at least I can order from PW to make up for what I'm missing.

You're darn right we dont miss the cold or the snow. My dh used to spend every night after work from a week before Christmas to about mid February - going up on the roof of the house to shovel the roof off. Well of course that accumulated, and by the time February rolled around - you had to stand on tiptoes to look out the window to see over the snow banks. And that's no lie. What made it worse - we lived on Long Lake Peninsula - so we're out in the middle of Long Lake that got twice as much snow as anyone else in town due to our unpredictable lake effect snows. We would still have snow on the north side of our pole barn Memorial weekend. I just couldn't take the climate or the taxes any longer - but I DO miss the water, and I DO miss Meijer, and I DO miss my bro. and sister who still live there. That is pretty whacky that they would have embellies that went with something else entirely. I LOVE those sheer flowers. So pretty. Okay - you've got me jealous now. Time to go shopping. :D

Sonshine, I don't know anything about the snow in MI, but you're right about the taxes. The company I work for has a branch office in Edwardsburg and the taxes are a nightmare. I've spent way too many hours talking to the MI Treasury Department. You certainly went from one extreme to another as far as the weather goes. Do you enjoy living in Phoenix? I have a cousin that moved there several years ago & she loves it.

Our taxes in MI were getting outrageous before we left back in 1998. My sister and brother live there still and she's been telling me about all the little dumb 'user' taxes they've burdened everyone with on top of the over-inflated property taxes. We got out at a good time. And of course Michigan being an auto state primarily, my dh wouldn't have had a job anyway (he's an industrial electrician). Yep - we did go from one extreme to the next. ha ha - we packed up everything we owned, sadly said goodbye to family and friends, came out here with no jobs, knowing only each other, and we've never looked back. Best thing we ever did. Our daughter and her new husband joined us 2 years later. We are all happy as can be :D Your company might want to consider getting the heck out of 'dodge' before they raise taxes again. Now they're going to have to look for ways for Michiganders to start paying for the stimulous $.

"Most" of the time, I love living here in Michigan. I can't take the heat, and the snow doesn't bother me. I will admit though, when I was in Phoenix that one August, even though it was hot, it really was a different heat. Course it didn't hurt that the Biltmore has 7 different swimming pools, and we were able to go swimming every day. :D

Sonshine
04-24-2009, 06:46 PM
ha ha ha - yep and that's why so many people here have swimming pools. Me included. I looked forward to summer all year 'round in Michigan. I love the snow actually - but I hate driving in it - especially on the rural roads where we were - and especially when I have to be somewhere on time - like work. But 2 weeks into July - I was miserable. I don't handle heat very well. Everyone here laughs that "it's a DRY heat". And it is - you can duplicate that by turning your oven up to 200 degrees and putting your head in there  But between you and me - I would take an Arizona 108degree day over a humid 80 degrees anywhere else. Absolute comfort. Air conditioning out here is totally different, too. You don't get chilled by it. It's just comfy. And you were here during monsoon season, that's pretty humid by our standards. Still - - I DO miss all that water! Michigan had the clearest lakes. Our cabin up north does a pretty good job though of keeping us from getting too homesick. ;)

To MrsCleanhead, you're welcome. I honestly think PW should start to stock these. I forgot to mention this item they have too: Ezy-Stack Ribbon Dispenser (http://www.paperwishes.com/products/7513340000) (ideal if those tags don't appeal to you)

To Kasiahbug there's a delivery fee but if you spend over a certain limit it's free. I use Ocado so subscribe to their membership delivery which means I pay 12 bucks a month and get as many free deliveries as I want. I also use a website where you compare your shop with all 4 supermarket to see which one is the best option for you. I always find that with what I buy it's either Ocado or Sainsbury's that are best. If you're curious to see how it works go and have a look (http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/) ! LOL

Try it out and double-check if they give you a no quibble refund for items when you ring them up to complain (with Ocado now you do that online). And obviously double check everything with the receipt they will give you to see if they missed some items and had the cheek to charge for them. It's a time saver especially for non perishable heavy goods and you can stock up when they have offers on (toiletries....etc..), you can really pile it high as you're not limited by the size of your car.

cruisin_gal

cruisin_gal, I'm with you in wondering about ribbon storage!

I found a new way to store that last piece of a ribbon. I got about 50 empty film canisters from someone on Craigslist. They are white plastic that you can kind of see through. I cut a slice in the cap and then put one end of the ribbon through the slit and the rest in the canister. Put the lid on and it keeps it neat and tidy. And I can see what ribbon is in the canister because the end is hanging out. I put all my little canisters in a drawer of one of my organizer carts. I need more canisters but not too many folks use film any more. For now I will put a new ribbon in when I use another one up. And I will try and use up the ones that are still loose. I have the bolts of ribbon in a wooden box my Dad built me for another purpose. I'm a travel agent and back when we issued paper tickets I kept the receipts in these boxes. It is just an open top box about 4" deep with a half square cut out of the front panel. I store it on a book shelf and then just pull the whole thing out to see what ribbons I have. I will try and take a picture so you can see what I am talking about. The boxes were very easy to make out of 1/4" plywood and are really sturdy. I am trying to find other uses for the rest of them since they fit on the book shelf so well.

Melanie
05-03-2009, 10:27 AM
cruisin gal, now that's an idea I'll have to try! I think I still have a few of the white film canisters around here, as I have a film camera. I should try that with some of my ribbon in the glass jar (where I threw all those ribbons I had taken off the roll). Thank you! :D

Are there are pointers you can give me about weaving strips? Even though I'm working with the smaller Cardmaker's paper packs for my cards, I still end up with a lot of leftover strips. Weaving them might be an interesting way to cover the front of a card.

Check out these threads. I've used them both and things turned out well.

http://stampinat6213.blogspot.com/2007/07/quilt-card-tutorial.html

http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161115&highlight=weave+strips

There are others I know but I guess I didn't save them. If I find them again, I will add them to this thread.

Thanks for the links on paper weaving, cruisin gal! :) The first tutorial was a quilt card, which resembles a log cabin quilt square (I'm a sometimes quilter-- but cardmaking has definately taken over). I had thought of doing something like that with the strips but it's nice to see one made up.

The other link will take me some time to go through. I've already started cutting my odd-shaped paper scraps (the ones too narrow to use for matting) into 1/2" strips. These fit nicely in a short narrow plastic bin that looks like a cutlery holder or a desk/drawer organzier. I bought a plastic expanding file folder at Hobby Lobby (Spectrafile by Legacy Crafters/Beautone) to store some of my bigger scraps in.

I definately need to make sure I keep my ribbon away from my cat! Heather came over and we had some pieces of new ribbon out on the kitchen table. I had gone into the next room for a minute or two when she called me back in the kitchen to rescue my ribbon from the cat. Even though she was at the table, he had grabbed that ribbon and was chewing on the end . I had to cut off where he put his teeth marks in the ribbon. He did a real great job of slobbering all over what was left, so I put it in a mesh bag and then put it in the washer with my delicates. It seems fine, although I am air drying it in a room where he can't get to it! What a rascal! I really yelled at him so he knew I was mad.

The idea of the drawer organizer is inspired. I could get several to divide the colors and put them in the drawers of one of my organizer carts. I think I will measure one of the drawers and take a trip to Big Lots. If I could get 4 across, I could divide my strips into 8 colors in two drawers. And if I ever use up my strips (I know, I know) but if I did, I could use the dividers for other things. The more I think about that and how easy it would be to lift out one section and take it to my work space, I think maybe I will get one for all my little eyelet containers. I don't use eyelets often and they are always kicking around the drawer getting caught under stuff. I am going into that room right now and see what else that would work for.

That's why I love places like this. So many great ideas that I had never considered.

I got a set of three drawer organizers at Dollar Tree (about 9" long, 2 1/2" wide, and 2" tall). One holds paper strips and one holds my tools such as pens, long scissors, glue stick, short ruler, etc. The other one is waiting to be used. Like you mentioned, I like buying organizers that can be re-purposed after you've used up the items that were originally in it.

Cheri,

I have a horizontal paper organizer with 6 slots in it. The top slot houses January and February, 2nd March and April, etc., down to November in December. My newsletters are housed separately in another divider. I leaf through the newsletters when I'm looking for the right paper to go with my project. That way, I don't have to pull out every piece of paper I own in that color family. I don't have the heart to split them up and store them by color, solids, etc., because I hate to break up a set and the solids perfectly match the patterneds.

Jodi

Does anyone have workable suggestions on how to organize and store the monthly PW scrapbooking kits? I had been keeping them in their (sturdy ) mailing boxes but now my scraproom is being overrun by them. Do you disassemble the kits and blend in with your other supplies or keep each kit separate? I never heard of the ScrapRack system, but I'm going to check out the link now. Thanks!

Meijer does have a web site, and they will ship to you. Gee, this belongs in the "Erk" thread, but HOTP items are getting harder to find. Joann's, Michaels, and Meijer have all cut back in favor of DCWV Stacks, although Joann's still sells them online. Archiver's carries FWAF kits. Nothing at Hobby Lobby. The scrapbooking booth at our local antique and craft mall carries HOTP. If it weren't for my monthly PS, I don't know what I'd do. However, I must be the luckiest gal, because all of the aformentioned stores are within 5 miles of my house. Now, if only I had a working organization system. Very envious of your craft space -- my sister (the one with 9000 wood-mounted stamps) has similar arrangement -- no room for anything like that here! My punches are in a jumble in a bin!

My favorite organization tool is a paper machier jewelry box that my daughter decoupaged for me. It has three drawers, and each drawer is divided into 15 or 20 individual "cubbies" that are perfect for storing brads, buttons and other embellishments. I have organized it so that everything is arranged by color and theme. Makes it easy to find just the right brad.

I also save chocolate boxes (like Whitman Samplers) and use them to sort out brads and other embellishments.

My dh built me a series of 12x12 stacking cubes and I store a lot of my papers and tools in these.

I bought a printer's tray from a yard sale and use it for my wooden stamps. It looks great, and having my stamps all around me inspires me.

I keep my acrylic stamps inside clear page protectors in a 3" binder. Makes it easy to find them and keeps them protected, too.

Finally, I bought a gorgeous wooden file cabinet for a few dollars at a yard sale and I keep alot of my papers organized in this. Yard sales present all kinds of wonderful storage solutions for a very small investment!

I keep my scissors, markers and pencils in a kitchen tool organizer. Easy to find things this way.

I bought a bunch of wooden plate racks at a Linens and Things when it was going out of business. This is how I store my ribbon. The spools fit perfectly over the wooden dowels, and I can organize my ribbons by color families, which makes it easy to find what I want when I need it.

Of course, I LOVE to organize, and am always coming up with ways to repurpose containers for various purposes....

and a few more - I don't think there are any duplicate walls here - she crafts in her basement, and has stamps running floor to ceiling around plus some little swivel holders that she keeps "special" stamps on...

"WOW" is right! I have enough trouble finding things in my little corner. I don't even want to think how she finds the right stamp!

I think she's got 'em grouped in categories somehow so she knows where to look. I have 2 little drawers of stamps and often come home with a duplicate...no idea how she manages not to do that every time but she doesn't! Just wished we lived closer to each other...

Have you told her that she should get help for her obsession?
Wow, I can only dream of having that many stamps! Where does she live? Maybe I can go for a visit?!?!?

Have you tried the croppin companion. It is a binder system. It has a large pocket for your 12x12 papers and larger. The attached smaller pocket is for your pictures, stickers, embellies etc. This way you can organize your layouts.
It is a must as far as I am concerned. Especially if you you go to a crop somewhere else. The website is www.croppincompanion.com. If you decide to check it out let me know what you think 'cause I just love it.
