I've been scrapbooking for several years, but haven't considered cardmaking until I join this MB and saw all the fantastic cards you have made. I read the previous thread from Sonshine and appreciate all the tips you shared. I have tax refund money coming that's burning a whole in my pocket. lol Besides the blank cards/envelopes and paper mentioned in the previous post, what tools/supplies do I need to purchase? I don't have many stamps, so I'll add a few of those to my list, but I'm not sure which ones. Oh, it might help to know the kind of cards I'm wanting to make. I've been working in my church's children's ministry as a Sunday School and youth group teacher for most of the last 20 years. I decided last fall to take a break from teaching, but I still want to stay involved with our kids. So, I've decided to make and send encouragement, congratulations, and thank you cards to them. Any tips and/or advise for me?

Get as many dazzles as you can. They are so versatile and make card making easy.
Have a bone folder of some kind as I use my on every card and for almost everything. Good adhesive, which was also a topic on here somewhere but I'm sure it will be the same as your scrapbooks. Make sure to get ink for those stamps too LOL--- take a look at PW and tools and see what comes to mind- oh and a good smaller cutter for the smaller pieces of paper or matting. Good embelishments (flowers, buttons, ribbon, etc). I could go on and on:D

Excellent advise I would just add some ribbon and watercolour pencils. Trish :)

Thanks for the advice. I have the adhesive and a small paper cutter. I just watched this week's webisode, so I've put those 2 stamp sets on my list, as well as, ink and pencils. Now I'll add ribbon, flowers, and dazzlers (if I can only chose which ones). I'm sure I'll come up with other things that I "have to have."

A card is a scrapbook layout without the picture ! ;)
You can easily use scrapbook materials to make cards. I've been using the friendship 8X8 pad to make cards.
Here are three examples from it:

So go on, go wild ! LOL :D

If you go under the "Shop" section at the top of the message board and click on that, you will find a cardmakers section. Lots of good supplies there. You might want to check out the Cardmakers Creative Packs. Lots of goodies that are color coordinated.

These are AWESOME Fabyon - thanks SO much for sharing. Love those woven hearts. And the Fairy card - reminds me that before I was playing with paper - I was (am?) a painter, and I really need to get out my colored & water color pencils, too. See - until I came here to this MB I didn't realize what a rut I've been stuck in. I hope everyone gets as much out of sharing with you all as I have. Thanks everyone!

Wow,what does a person say when they are asked,"What do I buy to make my own cards?" I have been a card maker for over 3 years now. I have made good buys and bad buys. My first bit of advice to think about is who is going to be your audience for your cards? What occasions do you want to address with your cards? Do you want to make simple cards or more elegant cards? I would start off sitting down and thinking about these questions. I did when I first started and still made a few blunders . You can make some very nice cards with a few things to start with. E-Bay can give you some ideas as to what products are out there. Just go to E-Bay and click on crafts. There you will find a lot of stuff that you can ponder over and think to yourself,"Would this be something I would enjoy using to make my cards?"DON'T ,I REPEAT DON'T ,BUY EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING YOUR EYES SEE." It can be so overwhelming because there is a boat load of stuff out there that people want to sell you.I started off with buying a package of white cards with envelopes, a package of colored paper, a box of colored pencils,a glue stick and one stencil that had a bunch of designs on it. As time went on I "slowly " added other things to my collection.Hope this bit of info helps all you newbies out there.~Sandra~ :)

Thanks for sharing everyone. All your advise has been great. I try to remember NOT to buy everything I want at first. I'm sure I'll be a lot less overwhelmed, and my bank balance will be a lot larger.:D
