Last week, I went to Scrapbook Trends Magazine's website. Was impressed with what I saw, but didn't subscribe at that time. Today, I received an email from them for a free online mini book to demonstrate how cool getting these online subscriptions are.

It's a fantastic little book. My only complaint is that I can't seem to KEEP it. I find no where on there that gives me the option of saving or running. It's not on my desktop, even though they called it a download.

I said all that to get to this: Has anyone on the MB's subscribed to an online subscription, and do you have the option of saving it to your harddrive?

This little book is AWESOME. They even give full instructions on how to do book binding. I don't know how to tell you to get your own sent to you, but all I know is I went to SCRAPBOOK TRENDS magazine, went to their website and signed up for their newsletter (I think) - hey - that was last week already. I can't remember what the heck I did yesterday, let alone a week ago :p
Anyway, I'm very curious to see if anyone has an online magazine subscription and how well they like it. It's getting to the point of SERIOUS storage problem around here with not only all the major scrapbook magazines, but years of painting magazines I won't part with, and of course all the quilting magazines I've accumulated help - I'm being burried alive here.
Thanks any and all for your input

I have an online subscription to cardmaker right now and you can save them--- I was just looking at the scrapbook trends one as you wrote this- how funny.
Is the mini book something you got for purchase and is it PDF format, or do you know?

The free one you could download - THEY sent to me in an email. But - you may get one too if you go on their website and sign up for a newsletter or something. SOMEHOW they got my email address. I have not ordered a subscription. It looks really great, but it's way over my budget for magazine subs. I have some of their card magazines that I got as door prizes before, and I know they're really nice. Almost like a book rather than a magazine. But I just can't fork out $45 for a magazine!!! But if others offer the same on-line subscriptions, I'll take them up on it, thanks!

Oh, and Angela - to answer your question - I thought it was in PDF format - but the more I look at it - it just simulates PDF - without a place to save. So I would not say it's in a TRUE pdf format, no. When you go to their site - look for somewhere you can sign up for a newsletter or something, rather than trying to find this free download - because remember - they sent it to me by email.

Their online subscription starts at $4.99 per month-- I am going for it...

When you go to open the file does it give an option to open or save? Usually if it is PDF and opens in your browser there isn't a way to save from there.
I already subscribe to their newsletter, but no offer for a free mini book...Lucky you! Maybe I'll sign with a dif email:D

Hmmm... dunno. I get their newsletter, have for a few years now, but I've not been sent anything like that. Is it maybe something you can copy and paste in a word document?

You probably opening the PDF file within your browser as kasiahbug mentioned. If you look carefully you'll see that a temporary bar will show up under your usual browsers bars. On the left handside you'll see an icon to save your pdf anywhere you want. Be careful as the icon button for the save looks like an old floppy disk whilst next to it there's a print icon button too.

Nope - none of the above. I 'downloaded' it once again (which isn't even really a download) and there is nothing on any tool bars giving you the option to run or save like a normal download. That's why I said 'download' because it doesn't really download anything - it just opens up automatically.

But - there's more than one way around all this to share it with you - so...

If you would like to receive this too - send me an email and I'll forward it to you. :p

In the subject line - put your PW MB screen name so I can find you. It's a great little(?) book! It's over 100 pages. By the way - up in the far left corner it says "learn about the new Yudu download technology" which probably explains it all right there why I can't save it. :(

Wow! That certainly is a different format isn't it? The only options I can see are printing it or bookmarking it.

Sonshine

Yep - that's about it. And if I had to print it out - with the price of ink and paper - I'd just buy it. =D

Sonshine is not very wise to put your email like that in a forum post, hun. If you can't edit ask Huston to delete that bit.

Fab- thanks for the warning - but my email address is plastered all over the cyberworld. Because of the work I do - I have virtually inpenetrable vaults on my computer - I can't even get my message replys have the time ;) So thanks for taking my best interest at heart, but it's okay, really. I've been programming computers for years, that's why my harddrive is encrypted. But that's really sweet of you to say that. But this new Yudu download technology has me stumped for sure. I'll have to check into that. Thanks Fab!!!

That is good advice. Generally, spammers will run programs that collect email addresses that are in plain text or links on web pages. Forums are a pretty easy target for a lot of spammers. It sounds like Sonshine is aware of the risk, but I would be happy to edit the post if needed.

Hi Huston, and thanks for offering. Actually - now that I hear others are starting to recieve these on their own from the magazine pub. itself, and a direct link is now posted, I can edit that part out. Yes, I am well aware of the spammers, but actually they get more info from cookies, Facebook, Twitter, etc. than anything else. They don't usually spend time on smaller message boards. I make it a constant practice to delete occasional emailers addresses from my personal address book, so no one can link anything in my address book ;) My address book is encrypted as well for even safer insurance. Also, as another heads up to everyone - I always use an alternative email address as opposed to my main address. Thanks, all.

And did you notice it's last years? I already have it. That's the only thing I normally buy from them.

Not sure. I get their newsletters all the time, so that's how I know when it's out. I will have to look and see if I can figure it out for you.

Ok, I checked back on another message boards old posts and one person had posted that it comes out in the summer. Another person had posted the end of last April that she had just bought it. If you are now subscribed to their newsletter, just keep watching that. If I hear anything, I will try to remember to let you know.

Thanks, Heather for the info. I'll be looking for it. I checked with them and that particular book is sold out in print form. But I think when it does come out - I'm seriously going to consider getting it in digital format. I've just got TOO MUCH STUFF!!! Or actually let me put it another way. I have too much STUFF of too many different things. A closet crammed with wood surfaces to paint, two cabinets of oils and acrylic paint, a sewing cabinet full of quilt fabric...aaarrrggghhh - work just plain gets in the way!!! I'll never be able to finish all this stuff if I have to keep working.

Sonshine, I worked for 9 months, a mere span of time, in the Walmart fabric department some years ago. In that short amount of time you would not believe the amount of fabric I bought! Most of it is remnants, as they would take an additional percent off, 50 I think, that I have never seen any other ones do. I have box upon box of it. I shudder to think what would have happened had I been there longer!

I did a lot of cleaning out of my fabric stash last year, and only kept whole pieces of fabric. Being a quilter, and doing a lot of applique, you get a bunch of odd shaped pieces - they're not even what you could call remnants actually. Yep - I saved pieces of fabric the way I save pieces of paper now. Looked into getting back into quilting a few years ago, but I got STICKER shock at what it was going to cost me just to make a baby quilt. So many classes I wanted to take, but when reality set in on how much it was actually going to cost to finish the class project, it was in the hundreds. That is ONE addiction I'm thankful I recovered from. The cost of fabric alone drove me right out of it. I know I should gather all my quilting stuff up and have a sale, but I just can't bring myself to part with it. I keep thinking one of these days...

I would use that fabric, use bookbinder glue to stick a piece to some cardstock and then cut it to make mats for interestingly textured cards. I bet it can even be cut by die-cutting machines.

You know what - I have seriously thought about that - and that's definitely on my To Do list. I usually iron freezer paper to the back of my fabric when I print on it, I wonder if it would be strong enough to go through my Cricut and hold it in place. I'd love to cut some flowers from fabric. Anyone try this and know for sure?

kasiahbug

They put fabric in the cricut on the infomercial, and we all know that whatever happens on TV happens in real life...

I was just telling my mom yesterday that I really want some fabric for my cards. It could be so much fun!
