Okay, I've finally decided to do one -- well actually 8. I've been talking about doing one ever since my oldest dd was little. My kids have always loved to hear stories about my grandparents and great grandparents and they feel like they "know" them even though most of them passed away before they were even born. I've wanted to put those stories and lots of pictures and all the important facts: dates, places, etc, in an album for each of the kids for 7 or 8 years, but for various reasons I've never gotten it done. Since that time, I've been researching my family's history and the project has grown from 3 to 8 albums covering several generations. The sheer size of the project has intimidated me for a while now, but I've decided to break it down into smaller pieces and start with my dad's maternal family. My Granny is in her late 80s and is the only grandparent I have left, so I want to record in memories while I have the chance. I'm not sure how much I'll get done, but I'm planning to give however much that is to my family for Christmas this year, then continue working on the project next year. I'll steal the albums back right before next Christmas and add the additional pages.
Anyway, has anyone tackled a project like this? Any ideas and advise will be appreciated.

Hi Sheila, first of all good on ya to have decided to create fantastic heirloom the next generations in your family will cherish forever. I don't know if it's still available but I got from Paper Wishes a few months ago a fantastic kit that came with papers and a scrapbook for only 20 bucks a total bargain. So that could get you started a the papers are just perfect for that vintage look.
Vince loves scrapbooking and made this lovely geneaology family heritage scrapbook here's the link (Most of the papers are HOTP) I hope it will inspire you:

Wow Fab -- What a great album. Thanks so much for sharing. That Vince is a pretty talented guy. Do you think he'd mind if I did a little lifting? I'll look for the kit you mentioned; although, I just ordered the Sara Vintage papers that are in either the summer or mom's warehouse sale.

Sheila, That's quite some project you have ahead of you. Think of all the good memories that you're going to share. Wish some one in either of my families had thought of that idea. But then knowing my family, it'd be like capturing WW2. Keep us posted on how your coming along. I saw some lovely heritage papers but at this moment can't remember where. Judi

I can't imagine how much effort that album(s) will be. I wish I had the patience to do something so personal.
Fab, Vince did an awesome job on his album!

Oh you can copy and scraplift away to your heart content. I like to share what I love ! (opsss sounds like a mantra from somewhere else - wink)
Vince has been always drawing but as a hobby we started both crafting three years ago. I've just made a layout yesterday for a blog challenge and felt a bit rusty because I hadn't scrapbooked in ages. Vince is making scrapbook pages of when we met with the designer Brenda Pinnick when she visited London. We had a day trip at the British Museum.
Vince says thank you to all your lovely compliments and he's turned all red now ! LOL

OMG! Vince has done an amazing job! I need to go back and look at it closer again! I'd love to see other things Vince has done too.
curriekidsmom - That is an awesome idea! My other sister made a nice album for our dad for his 70th birthday that was given to him this past weekend. I'm going to see if she will let me scan it and post it.

Nope, not Melanie, but our other sister. She doesn't post here. I'll have to ask her if I can, and then borrow the album from my Dad.

It's our younger sister who made the album. She doesn't post here, but she does use some of the HOTP 8x8 papers, and the heritage album is the 8x8 size. It's a more manageable size for her, and I think it's a good size for the older smaller photos.
I know she and my uncle scanned old photos and did not use the originals in the album. For some photos she was able to lighten them a bit when they were too dark. I think most of the originals were small photos and she enlarged them to 4x6 (usual pic size), but some ended up looking too grainy and probably would look better printed as wallet size photos. They did their scanning and printing in the photo department of a chain store (Meijer).
I have the HOTP Heritage Pages idea book that's in that first pack that Fab mentioned; it also contains some 8.5x11 patterned paper that's suitable for heritage layouts. If you do 12x12, they show how you can still use them on your page. Of course if you use 8x8, just cut them down.

There is a webisode about an 8x8 vintage album. Here's the link for high-speed connections: http://www.paperwishes.com/webisodes/?page=high&id=41
Although they use the 8x8 Vintage Papers (which I don't see PW carrying anymore), it is still a heritage album. You could substitute the 8x8 Heritage Papers nicely. They show some good ideas.

OH WOW!!! This is all right down my alley as I love doing the Vintage cards... I can sometimes "Lift" a scrap page idea and make it into a card!! These are simply wonderful ideas. AND.... I thought I had seen ALL the webisodes but somehow I missed this one! What a beautiful album!!
I have done a few mini albums.. ( the 12 X 12 intimidates me! ) and I love that Sara has put out the 8 X 8 stuff!! For me that is the perfect size. I just wish there was more pages and papers!!
God bless

So much good stuff shows up when I've just been gone over the weekend! I'll spend all day catching up!
Fab, Vince did SUCH a great job on that album!!!!! Kudos to him and tell him thanks so much for sharing!!!!! (Get him to post more stuff -- his pages are very inspiring!)
Heritage album(s) is(are) on my list, but I guess I've been a bit intimidated and wanted to get my feet wet with what seemed easier themes first (scrapbooks of trips we've taken). Right now my heritage album sits in the back of my mind, and I've got a computerized memo I've started to myself to jot down any ideas in preparation to tackling that challenge.
Seeing Vince's album pages really inspires me -- and the webisode is helpful too -- somehow I missed that one! Thanks!!!!

Okay, here's my first attempt for my heritage album. This a different style for me and the first time I've done a lo for anyone but my immediate family, so I'm a little unsure of myself. Any comments, suggestions, etc are greatly appreciated.

That's a good deal - the book itself is $20 so it's like you're getting all the other stuff free! Vince did a great job on those pages. I would never have thought to use the black lace and I love the look! I've gotten a lot of pictures from my mom that I want to scrapbook when I finish my college album. I got a great picture of my great grandparents I just feel so fortunate to have!

Pretty page Sheila! Love the ribbon frame and the colors are great.
I am still slogging away on the big famly reunion project/scrapbooking albums. Mine are all 12x12...first step is filling out family group sheets for all of them ... I'm using Karen Foster family group sheet paper for that. And I have TONS of photos...have tried to sort them roughly by generation and family...
And then I am just planning to pick a stack, and one photo, and do a page on it with what I know. (Before I do a page I will be sending out a broadcast to family members with the picture included and ask them for any info they have, any stories etc.) Suspect we won't get a lot of feedback so will journal with what we do have and just move on to the next picture and page. Interspersing the completed picture LO's where they belong among the family group sheets. Plan is to have 7 books for the one side of the family, one for each of the original brothers/sisters who started the reunion. ...Assuming I live to 120 I might get it all done.
