I use various mixed media. including things like printed out objects, or cut from magazines, doilies, foils, buttons, pressed flowers, old stamps or make my own, anything with texture.
Sylvie in London.

I love the look of collage but everytime I try it myself I just end of staring at the paper and not doing anything. I would really like to get into it.

How do you get yourself started on a project? Any tips?

KarenLiz,

There are several online classes that are available if you're interested in getting started that way.

Tammystudio,
Online classes would be a good start. Any site suggestions?

Hot Off The Press produced a line a few years back called "Artsy Collage". Paper Wishes still carries a few of the paper products, such as smaller papers and paper art for collage. They even have two collage kits (meaning the papers, art, and instructions) for masculine and nature collage. I have them both, but haven't done anything with them yet, as I was thinking they'd be great for cardmaking too. Too many things I want to do and so little time... :o

Anyway, HOTP also produced "Artsy Collage: It's Easier Than You Think..." which is an idea/instruction book that includes the papers and art for the projects shown. It is item #2315 and was published in 2003. You might get lucky and find it on eBay or a similar venue. I also have this book... :)

I think there might be an article or two about collage archived at Paper Wishes. I'll look and post their addresses if I can find them.

One article on collage is found here:
www.paperwishes.com/articles/HowtoCollagetheArtsyWay/51144

Another collage article similar to it is at:
www.creativepapercrafts.net/technique/200304.php

You can find the instructions for a few collage projects archived at:
www.creativepapercrafts.net/artsy/archive.php

These articles and projects are from 2003, so granted some/many of the products may no longer be available. Put "artsy collage" in the search box at Paper Wishes to see what they still carry. But you can get a general idea from these articles of how to start making your collage, plus they use papers from my favorite company! :)

In case you're wondering, I do save the HOTP articles, and my sister even saves all their PW catalogs. One nevers knows when they may find an idea there, especially since they are so generous in giving us free ideas! :D

Yup - I do collage, too. I do altered art - from collaged ATCs to books, even furniture. I have learned A LOT just by going online and reading blogs and tutorials and articles like the ones linked above. There are lots of videos, too, here on PW and on YouTube.

Glad to help! :)

If you want some of those HOTP Artsy Collage books, be on the look for them in the week or two at the PW website. My sister got their Summer 09 catalog early, and I noticed several Artsy Collage items in it, especially the "Artsy Collage: It's Easier Than You Think..." book (#2315), which I thought was out of print. Most of the projects in it are 3-D, like boxes and such, but they show the paper art used on a 12x12 layout. They also show the "Cigar Box Purses" paper art on a LO. It's neat to see slightly older items used in new fresh ways, especially for those of us who may have them in our stash.
