View Full Version : I've noticed a big divide !

I've noticed that people consider themselves either cardmakers or scrapbookers, like you can't be both. I personally make more cards than LO but I do enjoy scrapbooking although it's slightly more involved as you have to get the right picture and add your journaling. Sometimes I noticed that people feel that once they start scrapbooking, cardmaking is seen as a lesser 'art' if that makes sense.

I just wondered what are your thoughts about this, please. :)

I do both: scrapbooking and make cards. I make more cards simply because I need them more often....do you understand what I mean :)
I do take a lot of photos and scrapbook them it just takes time. I have weeks when I scrapbook more and weeks when I do cards.

i just consider myself a crafter. I make cards and do scrapbooking. But I have to be in the right mood to scrapbook since it takes more creativity. I also do cross stitch and enjoy making christmas ornaments (beaded, painted, paper etc).

I personally love to make cards. Nothing against scrapbooking but I looked at the HUGE box of picture albums I have and decided to just stick to cardmaking instead of getting into 32 years of pictures. Oh, I have been married for 32 years which is why I said 32. ~Sandra~ :)

I scrapbook and do cards also. Well I do a lot of things--mini books, paper crafts (such as file holders-recipe boxes etc...) and some off-the-wall art work. It is all creative use of paper. It's all FUN!

I do both. I was originally in scrapping, but moved into card making as well. I make my own cards now....but still will scrap layouts.

I have 43 years of scrapping to do....when I was born

Unfortunately they don't make enough hours in the day to do it all. I love anything paper. I love making cards, but also do alot of graphite and colored pencil art. Just seem to run out of time to do scrapbooking too, but I just love the pages that people do.

I do several things as well. I do make more cards but love to make small albums too. I have done scrap booking and have found that it seems to take more room and more stuff to scrap. It was easier for me at aleast when I had a craft room, I could get out items and start projects and then leave them to go to work or to bed. Now it's all over my dinning room table. :-)

I scrapbook more and leave card-making until i need a special one. Then out comes all the supplies and i usually end up making about 3 new ones. :)

I do both also--sometimes if I'm having scrapper's block, I'll make a card or two and then I'll be inspired to start working on a layout!

As someone mentioned above, I do mostly cards because they are needed more. I don't do my own layouts though, unless there is a contest I want to enter. Otherwise, I make them for other people. My poor daughter wants me to make an entire book of her, but I just don't have the time. I love cards and love learning new techiniques. My new favorite thing is Dazzles- LOVE them! I had been eyeing them for a while and finally bought every one of them and now want to buy more already. If you haven't done a project with them, try- they turn everything they touch into elegance!

Fabyon, I'm with you and notice what you call a "big divide". I am active on another scrapping chat also and it doesn't even have a dedicated card thread. We talk about making cards occassionally but often in the context of a great way to use "leftover" embellishments and paper scraps. I rarely make a card but do a lot of layouts - Sandra I am trying to scrap almost 60 yrs of photos:D. And for me it is hard to mentally go from one thing to the other. Plus I probably have a slight mental block as I worked at a Hallmark store for over a decade and have very very high standards of what I want in a card and don't feel I can be that original

I do both but I do more layouts. I think you have to be more creative with cards because you've got a smaller space for impact and you're giving them to someone else. Layouts are for my own personal satisfaction.

Great topic, Fabyon!

I think here at PW most do both, but I have noticed it elsewhere, too. I am not a scrapbooker. I've thought about it a lot and what I came up with is that because I don't have kids, am not overly sentimental and am not into photography, scrapbooking just doesn't fit.

I do consider myself an artist AND a crafter - those are not exclusive, imo.

I work on smaller substrates like cards, ATCs, inchies, arches, books and journals. So my only complaint is how hard it is to find smaller stamps, stickers, elements and so on. I would like more products that are not geared to a 12x12 page.

BUT... I'm glad that the SB industry is so huge because all of us paper crafters benefit from there being more products and innovations as a whole.

(Psssst... sorry if my post was all over the place. It's waaaay past my bedtime here.)

I also make more cards........compared to working on scrapbooks.........
I guess I look at a scrapbook as a "long term" project and cards as a short term project. And I do use all the same techniques and designs...in both....but in different configurations.................Plus.......I think that the one main difference between cards and scrapbooking.......is that......most cards are sent out or made for someone..........and scrapbooks are mostly made as keepsakes..............
Just some of my thoughts........thanks for letting me share......

I have tried scrapping booking but LOVE the cardmaking, it is more instant gratification type and you can do it in the time I have. I find my scrapbooking takes a lot more time and have a tendency to get too creative and my pictures get lost and have too many pictures over the last forty years.:o

I am definitely a card maker, not a scrapbooker. I have masses of photos in albums already, without making a 12"x12" page just to hold 1-3 of them and that's where it leaves me cold.

I am doing a small one for my daughter's forthcoming prom, but that is just one special occasion, and I guess I will be tempted should she ever get married, but on a day to day basis I like the fact I can enjoy my hobby of making cards but don't have to keep the end results.

I've noticed the divide with some of my friends and acquaintances. They seem to be one or the other and have at times been rather defensive about their 'own craft' - not wanting the two to 'co-mingle' I guess you could call it. But I do both, I consider myself more of a scrapbooker, maybe it's because I have been scrapping for over ten years and just recently started making cards.

I too have over 35 years of photos but do not try to scrapbook them all. I keep a fair share of my photos in albums and have scrapbooked maybe about a third of them. Special scrapbooks and journals of every size and reason, but I still find myself spending time leafing through those photo albums.

Both for me too. I've always made my own cards since I was a child, then last year I got into scrap-booking. Now I'm loving both, and making a point only to use scraps for cards makes me feel more eco-friendly. Because scrap-booking isn't really, is it, but card-making is.

Hi there Red, I'm with you on using scraps for card making. I even cut pictures out of magazines or other items and have used them on my cards and some of them are just beautiful. You just have to use your imagination with scraps. I throw nothing away. I have a "SCRAP BOX" that I sift through for just that perfect scrap to fit in a flower or to fill in an empty space. Making your own cards can run into money as I have found. I started making cards 3 years ago and bought everything in sight. Now I buy more thoughtfully or try using what I already have. Happy Crafting ~Sandra~

For me I have decided to call myself a Mixed Media artist as it covers all things. I do make more cards than layouts I also do canvas and vintage so that title just seem to fit me.

However here in Oklahoma I do see that when I crop layout people tend to sit together and card people tend to sit together strange.

I do both. I love making cards and scrapbooks are all under 8x8. Most of my scrapbooks now are in board books so I can use paint and other things to make the book look really interesting. Since I love photography too I use my pictures in many of my projects.

Yes, I see the "divide", but not any "territorial issues". I am a card maker - but my friends do both. When we get together for a "play date" some do cards, others do scrap booking, while another might be doing an entirely different paper crafting project. We all share paper, embellishemets and ideas . . . it is a great hobby!

I do both scrapbooking and cards. I started with scrapbooking about 10 years ago and started making cards about three years ago. I am currently making a lot of cards but not any layouts.
I tend to be a "lumpy" cardmaker, putting a lot of brads and other 3-D embellishments on them, whereas I am a flat and simple scrapper. This way I can be creative with the cards but I still have room to put all my layouts, which are 8.5x11, in albums.
When we go to a family crop, some will work on cards, some on layouts, and some will do both. :)

Well, I started scrapbooking by redoing my wedding album for my 25th anniversary. Unfortunately, my husband passed away 2 months before I could surprise him with the "redo". While I loved going to the scrapbooking crops with my friends I could not bear to scrap...so I used their odds and ends and started making cards. NOW I am a card crafter. And I know he would be proud. CARDERS UNITE!

 I really don't see a divide between cardmakers and scrapbookers. Personally I found it a natural progression to gravitate into both. We draw our inspiration from the same source, use the same materials, and we both have much to learn from each other to enhance our creativity. Hopefully no one is looking down their noses at either. Whether I'm receiving a heart-felt scrapbook that someone has made for me - or a 4x5 handmade card, I get totally choked up. That someone put their busy lives on hold to do something extraordinary for me, that deeply touches my heart. I consider all of us on this message board to have one common denominator - we love to create using paper, and we love to share the joy of our crafts with others.

I'm afraid I have never scrapbooked before. But I do find a lot of inspiration from the layouts that I look at and find that many can be used on cards. I think of myself as more of a "paper" crafter. I like to try all kinds of things. Not sure why scapbooking never appealed to me. But I sure do admire those who can put those pages together so beautifully.

I definitely do both. I tend to do most of my scrapbooking, however, at crops, when I know I'm going to have several uninterupted hours to work. Cards I do more at home, when I can have a finished product in 30 minutes to an hour. I tend to use more techniques I've learned on my cards too, for whatever reason. I don't know why I don't do more stamping on my scrapbook pages - I just don't tend to.

I actually began my paper crafting hobby by attending a CM scrapbooking event years ago. Shortly after that I discovered rubber stamping and card making and knew I found my nitch. For some unknown reason I just didn't enjoy scrapbooking like I did card making and rubber stamping so scrapbooking quickly fell by the wayside for me.

With that being said, I haven't really noticed a divide among the two either as supplies are interchangeable for both crafts and I think many do both. In fact, for a few years I made cards with the CM scrapbook group while the majority of the gals worked on their album pages. That group eventually disbanded, but it was fun while it lasted.

I would love to do both... I just find the scrapbooking so intimidating.... making cards you just have a small canvas... but with scrapbooking its more involved... I find I have a problem building a page around a photo... I have more luck doing the "Quote books"... where you take a quote and build around it...
But I love my cardmaking... but I don't consider myself divided when it comes to the two.. some are just more adapt at doing the scrapbooking...

Hi Karen... I have done one of the 8 X 8's and a 6 X 6 and I even took one of those little photo books you can buy at the dollar store with the place to put your own personal photo in the front, and made a scrapbook from that!! I think it was a 4 X 6.... I made one for my hubby featuring his mom and then made 9 copies for his siblings to pass out at the family reunion.... you know... I never got a comment from a member of that family except for my hubby??? That was a lot of work... but... oh well.... Live and learn.... they better enjoy that one... there won't be any more....

I know just how you feel Nyoka. I recently made recipe books using my foster mom's recipes for each of her granddaughter-in-laws...she passed away in 2004, and her daughter, these girls' MIL, passed away this year. Took forever to do them...made them into books with my BIA...They both SAID they loved it and would treasure them..but the one who wanted it the MOST just moved to Australia and I just found out left it behind with stuff she didn't want any more. The other one saw it and took it and is keeping it for HER daughter...but :mad::mad:

I started scrapbooking because the first 50 cards I made were 'pants' - I just CANNOT make a decent card to save my life, BUT - I love the end results of my scrapbook pages and mini books and albums, and ATC's (blush) of course.

I made a card last week and posted it on here - it was such a simple card, I can't say that I thoroughly enjoyed making it because I'm not a card maker - and it was a christmas card. I am now going to go buy my Christmas cards for this year - again.........................no one would appreciate receiving a card from me - that was 'handmade with love'.

Oh Sam, how incredibly sad! She certainly doesn't seem to understand she left behind a piece of her history. Thankfully, it sounds like one of them appreciated what she had and wants to pass it on to her dau. I think this comes back to what many of us have said earlier - we do these crafts because we love doing them. We can't control what people do with the things we share. I'm guessing this says a whole lot about that young lady and not much of it good. However, it also says a whole lot about the size of your heart and all if it is good. You can make me something anytime you want!! I will treasure it (just like my Frosty book).

Karen, I couldn't say it any better. I've seen this first-hand as well and it is so deflating. I'm so glad that there are those that do appreciate the effort and love that goes into something handmade. The others are truly missing out.

My future SIL grew up in a very competitive family and because of this he doesn't have much enjoyment from Christmas. He sees it as the competition it was at home (and he hated) as to who had given whom the best/most expensive present. My daughter told me he would be happy with jsut one of my handmade cards. That he has actually saved the 4 or 5 I've made him while they've been dating. I was touched that he found them that valuable.

Its always sad to make some thing special for some one only to find out that they just didn't appreciate it. Been there several times. It bothers me when that happens but then I make another gift for some one & they rave about it every time they use it. Goes to show that you can't please every one. SamB, I keep the card you made in a special place so I can look at the rainbow often. By the way, saw a double one going to work a couple of weeks ago. Judi

Wise words everyone - live and learn! Judi, thank you also...don't you love double rainbows? Have never taken a good shot of them though.
I keep all the papercrafting stuff others give me...usually I stick them in page protectors in a 3-ring notebook, generally one for each year! I love going back and looking thru them and seeing all the creativity; they are a great source of inspiration.

This is an interesting thread and it is until now I found it.

I do both, but recently I'm more in cardmaking and Paper Crafting. :)

Layouts let me be very creative, but the many techniques specially in stamping got me back into cardmaking more and more.

This month I got so many Card requests that I couldn't find time to scrap
Next year when things slow down a bit I can scrap all those sweet Christmas photos.

I was reading in the thread about there are some people that doesn't appreciate handmade gifts.

That's so true.

Despite of that a lady asked me to create some handmade gifts so she can give to her friends. She said that they loved them.

It's so difficult to know beforehand who will appreciate a handmade gift.

I know that I love handmade gifts and handmade cards and I even keep Recipe pages from 6x6 Inches and cards I participated in swaps from a few years ago. It's always fun to receive handmade cards overseas and I treasure them so much.:)

How, discouraging, marmar! I don't think most people have any understanding of the cost -- money, time, & love -- that goes into a scrapbook. Fortunately, the scrapbooks I've made for other people so far HAVE been treasured. However, I know there are certainly some people in my life where that would not be the case.

I love to make cards. I did put together a scrapbook for my parent's anniversary two years ago, but I did not feel the same satisfaction as I get when making cards.
