Hi Everyone,

I've only been scrapping/cardmaking for 3 months, but I love it! Paperwishes and the webisodes have made me excited about my new hobby. However, I CANNOT get the use of the craft knife. I cannot maneuver it properly. I'd like to use the new downloadable templates Paper Wishes posted for free but I'd have to use the craft knife and that makes me cringe.

Any tips or pointers?

I used not like the craft knife too. I found it's the knife you may be using that is the problem. I recently bought a new one by Cutter Bee and now I love using it as it makes the details so much better. I got mine at Walrmat- A little spendy, but well worth it. I used it to cut around my Dazzle flowers here:

Thanks kasiabug! I'll try that one and see how it works.

Try scissors... :p;)I don't do much with knifes either. I do use scissors, they seem to do the job a lot quicker... I have several scissors, one for sticky things, one for regular paper, one for fabric and one for smal detailed clipping. I have the handles in different colours so I don't mix up. This seems to work for me!:)

I am not much of a craft knife fan either. I did buy the one by Fiskars that wraps around your finger. It is easier to use, but I still prefer scissors. Sorry, not much help to you.

I use scissors for most things, but there are always those places that scissors just will not get to nicely, such as the image I put above where there are small holes in between the orange flowers. I used to just color them in, but with the new craft knife it takes less time and they turn out better.

Cathy, Fiskars has a new finger held craft knife that has a swivel blade on it. I haven't used it yet, but you may want to give it a try. I purchased mine at JoAnn Fabrics.

Yup - 99% of the time, I use scissors, too. I have several scissors - some for small detail, one that is large for bigger cuts, one for only fabric, one for only rubber, one that won't get gummed up with glue, a tiny one for really small bits... and probably a lot more! LOL Maybe I have a "scissors thing" huh? I guess my point is that using a craft knife is not a prerequisite to making cards or pages! ;)

One trick is to move the paper rather than the knife when doing a corner. Sounds tough but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it

The trick or experience in getting things done is always with the right tools for the job and a good quality of tool.

I have bought several xacto knives and never did like using them. I bought the cuttlebug knive but it broke and wouldn't retract within the first 2 weeks I owned it.

So, I went to Paper Wishes and placed an order for their knife and (of course) I was in love. Here is a link http://www.paperwishes.com/products/7593530000. The blade is small and the size of the barrell is like a pen.

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for your help! I just got the Cuttlebee and it def. works better than the x-acto knife I had before. (I may also get the PW knife;))

Again thanks for your help! (Gotta love this board)

Glad you liked it -- now when you see the need, it won't be so hard to reach for it LOL

I use a fingertip craft knife and I love it. Mine is from Fiskars, not to pricey but worth it any way. You slide your finger into the circle and hold it like a pencil. I find that holding it closer to the blade works well. There are two kinds one with a stationary blade and one with a movable blade. I tend to like the stationary one. I have more control over it. Or at least I think I do. Hope this helps.

For me I use the cutterbee until I found this knife I was deathly afraid....

However once I started using this I found myself cutting out everything from the design paper. Just make sure to always pull towards yourself slowly that seems to work for me. I will attach a few pics that I have handcut using this craft knife.

I love using the craft knife, but was banned by my husband for a while. While cutting paper, I cut my finger open and had to have stitches. The nurses all thought it was from cutting food with a knife, and I had to tell them I was making cards!

Just go slow, and don't use it when you are tired!

I like how Sara said in one of the Webclasses to use your ruler, it has opened a new life for me and the knife. I tried using it before but didn't have the control, then I found objects at home the size I needed for around corners. such as glass drinking glasses or jars. If they can cut straight then I figured why not circles. And the fun began.
