I know I posted on here that the Cricut's new Gypsy is being featured on the Home Shopping Network Sept. 24th. But what I didn't know up until now - what it's capable of doing. I thought it was just another gimmick to load your cartridges in and tote them around. Apparently, it can do a whole lot more - - it actually can turn your plain Cricut into something that's more functional than it currently is. I have no idea what it's going to retail for - but Christmas is coming :)

Here is a link to the video:

Sonshine, it does so much more. I'm so cricut challenged but love computers so I thought this might be a great benefit for me. The retail price right now is $299. Santa won't be giving that to me this year!

$299???? HA! Well Karen, that's 2 houses santa will be passing up this year. For $299 it should be voice-activated - in fact it had better just READ MY MIND!!!! HA HA HA

I really am interested in what all the Gypsy will do right out of the box and what they have planned down the road.

My thoughts so far are:
Being able to have all your purchased cartridges available is probably its most seductive feature. Problem is, I don't take my bug to crops and already have all my carts in one place even though I can't mix and match unless I get the Jukebox which only holds 6 carts. You can daisy chain 3 together so that makes 18 carts. I forget what the Jukebox costs but getting 3 is probably getting pretty steep.
Designing on the go. Well, I don't do that either except in my head. The screen is way too small to be very useful, in my opinion.
The thing for me is this, for $300 I can buy a netbook that has a larger screen, can run Design Studio and SCAL and is still a full functioning computer.
If I want to take my bug to a crop, I can take it with a netbook and then design, save and cut all my projects and surf the net and chat with my PW friends. I don't think the Gypsy will offer that out of the box!
I really think I wouldn't get enough bang for the bucks. I will pay good money for something that I can get a lot of use out of but I just don't see the Gypsy giving me as much as a new netbook would.

Finally, I have been wanting a really good reason to own a netbook and this might give me one!:p

Anyone have any other opinions or information on the Gypsy and what all it will be able to do? I have seen one video giving a demo on it and so far I am not impressed.

My own personal take on this is somehow, the creators of SCAL seemed to slip through Cricut's hands. When they originally created Cricut - what were they thinking - what did they have in mind by installing a USB port on it in the first place - and then never put it to use???? Seems to me like (just my take) as soon as rumors of SCAL technology came out - Cricut should have sank every friggin' last dime they had into acquiring that technology, patenting the software rather than spending countless hours and $$'s in research and development just trying to chase AFTER the great features of SCAL!!! Instead they try to put out these false warnings and rumors that acquiring and using SCAL will damage their cutting machines and void their warranty. What a scam. As far as I see it - they MUST have had something like SCAL in mind when they created it - or why put the USB port in it in the first place? Or advance the technology more quickly than what they did. Pure and simple - Provo Craft dropped the game winning ball in big fashion by not pursuing vector technology in the first place. Don't get me wrong - I love my Cricut - wouldn't want to replace it with anything else. But I think PC thought they saw a goldmine in selling CARTRIDGES rather than researching and developing technology that would benefit the user. If they had - they would be on E A S Y street right now. Just my humble opinion.

I'm with PattyIT. From some of the blogs that I read of people who were asked to test the Gypsy, there are still some bugs and upgrading that needs to be done. For the price I'm going with the notebook and SCAL2 first. I might add Design Studio later but want to see how much I use the notebook with SCAL2.

I never like to jump out there on the first release of a new item. I like to see how often they update and upgrade after it's been on the market for a while.
