Nancy, you might try here http://www.armed-guard.com/searchmil.html. I have it bookmarked for my heritage albums, but haven't gotten to this point yet. Hope this helps.

I think also that usually there is a crew picture taken on Navy ships -- not sure who you'd contact to find out but perhaps he's in some of those, if you could get your hands on them...this sounds like an awesome project and love the way you came up with a scrapbook with only one actual picture!!!! Way cool!

Update: I thought since everyone has been great about giving me ideas I would update you on my progress: I have purchased the US Navy Album from K and Company, today I purchased Navy scrapbook papers and ordered some more that I was unable to find locally. I found one paper that has parts of the uniform on it so I can use that for uniforms old and new (someone suggested this - I can't remember who right now - great idea though), I have purchased some embellishments and have ordered hat pins for the ships he actually served on. I am currently looking for patches for those ships as well. I am going to include the USS Arizona as well as the USS Constitution which was the first commissioned ship. "Dad" is going to a reunion in October - I am hoping he takes some pictures while he is there. Bob is doing a great job interviewing his dad without telling him what we are doing. I have researched the history of the Navy, the uniforms, the different types of ships in the fleet and have done an extensive search of the four ships he served on.

I will take pictures when the pages are finished so that I can post them here and send them to Bob in Iraq.

This has been a bigger undertaking than I initially thought but it has proved to be very interesting and I have learned some new stuff about the Navy.

Thanks again for all of your ideas - I have incorporated most if not all of them.

Dee

Thats great! I can't wait to see the pages. It is a huge undertaking but it will all be worth it in the end.

The album sounds fantastic!! And yes, I think trying to contact former shipmates would be a fantastic idea! Seeing an album that's about things and people in particular that were very meaningful to him, is WAY better than just an album about himself. It would mean more to HIM that way. You're definitely on the right track. Hope to see it when it's finished!

Just thought I would post an update. I have done lots of research and have lots of info. I am going to a scrappers weekend this weekend and my main project will be the Navy album. I am going to work on my Christmas cards Friday night, then it will be all Navy all the time Saturday and Sunday. I hope to be able to post pictures some time next week. Thanks again for all of your comments, encouragement and advice.

Until Sunday evening I will be in cropper's heaven. Have a great weekend everyone.

Dee
